Thoughtful Response
My experience with the MicMac Give Back taught me about caring. Caring for other people, especially those less fortunate than I am. We all care; we care for our dog, our family, and friends. MicMac Give Back influenced my feelings of caring even more. Well, let us think: If I were to be in Nicaragua, and I have to walk 4 miles every day just to bring home dirty water, and my parents earned only 1 dollar a day? I would really appreciate if there are children who wanted to help me and my country. Such children would be representing care toward me and my people. I think this project allowed us to look at life from a different perspective. It allowed us to contribute toward making the world a better place for all of us.

The Inspiration
So how did The MicMac Give Back get started? It all happened one day just before spring vacation. Phyllis, Max A's grandmother, came into my class to talk with the kids about some of her philanthropic experiences. She wanted to share with them ways people are giving back. They were completely enthralled with her stories, pictures of children in Africa about the same age as them, and her enthusiasm for giving. After listening to Phyllis, one student, Rishta, asked, "Can we raise money and build a well too?" The answer was a unanimous YES! We all knew the MicMacs were hard workers and up for the challenge. The whole group was on board and from then on the project was up to the kids. It was the students who wanted to do a bake sale, lemonade stand, make crafts to sell and to get the whole school involved with a Read-a-Thon. But without Phyllis, the students - The MicMacs - would not have known about this water crisis around the world. They would not have known how to get involved. Phyllis provided us with our connection to Women Thrive and even took on the job as treasurer for The MicMac Give Back. Not only was she the inspiration to this project, she has remained completely invested the whole time paying visits to the school weekly to talk with the kids and making countless phone calls and emails with me for the communications and updates. We are so grateful for Phyllis...her passion for giving is contagious! Thank you, Phyllis, for all that you have done for the MicMacs!

Screen on the Green
On Saturday, May 10th, Nathan and his family held a movie night in their backyard for The MicMac Give Back. It was a huge success!!! We raised over $340. The movie we showed was Princess Bride and the kids loved it. We also sold concessions such as popcorn, lemonade, water, and many more treats. This movie night and all the other events we are doing for The MicMac Give Back have been giving us an opportunity to help make a difference in another person's life. And the fact that we have been having fun is even more amazing. We appreciate all the support you have given us to help make a difference in the world.
Thank you.

CBS News Coverage
The MicMac Market was a huge success raising $1,545! The kids worked hard all day selling items and grabbing the attention of drivers passing by the market. Thank you to all of the kids and parents who came out and supported the fund-raiser. The video clip below was aired on Saturday night after the market. Before viewing pause the music at the bottom of the screen to hear the audio.

Lemonade Stand
On April 24, 2008 some boys in the MicMac Give Back came together and had a lemonade stand. Thanks to your help we raised $216. Not to brag or anything but I think that’s pretty good for a lemonade stand. We didn’t just sell lemonade though. We sold ice cream, gummies, and popsicles. We had a blast doing it. Once again, thank you for all your donations and don’t forget to spread the word.

A Successful Bake Sale
The students, along with their families, worked hard preparing baked goods for the bake sale on Friday, and all of their efforts paid off! The MicMac bake sale raised just over $700...wow! Thank you so much for all of the wonderful support!!! A special thank you to all of the moms who helped set up the bake sale and managed it throughout the lunch hours with the students. We really appreciate your help.
On Friday, the students took turns working the bake sale and painting birdhouses for the MicMac Market. Some students presented mini-lessons to other classes that they prepared themselves, while others were interviewed by the media about this service learning project. Friday was a busy day for the MicMacs!
A special thank you to Max D's mom who has been teaching the students how to sew. Each student will be making an adorable tissue holder for The MicMac Market. For some of them sewing is a new skill and they are having so much fun!
